Doctors’ stress and burnout levels are higher than ever before. And sadly, this is unlikely to change anytime soon. So, how can doctors best cope with doctor stress to prevent doctor burnout?
Could therapy be the answer? Or should we all just shake it off and get on with the job?
Those are the big questions today’s episode looks at. And to answer them, I’m talking with Dr Will Gao, COO of Suvera Health, a virtual clinical services company.
He shares the pressures and mental health challenges he faced as a doctor. And he discusses what he has learned about the role of therapy in coping with the challenges faced in clinical practice - namely doctor stress and burnout.
We explore how Will’s journey has influenced his move into an alternative medical career in which he now supports a thriving community of people in his company.
Finally, we also look at whether all doctors should have therapy throughout our careers - from medical school to clinical practice.
Should therapy be part of a holistic process to support overall wellbeing?
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Doctor stress and burnout is common and can affect all doctors at all stages of their careers
Everyone should make their well-being a priority
My perception of therapy was that it was something I didn’t need, I thought I could just get out of it on my own
Being a doctor and caring for others is a strong identity and you want to feel you aren’t letting others down
We should be more open to being vulnerable saying we are not okay
There was huge value in being able to talk to someone professionally
For me now, therapy is a preventative and part of maintaining my well being
Therapy helps you to understand yourself on a much deeper level and in a completely different way
Trust is a priority in getting the most out of therapy
People are the assets of your company, the individuals are what’s important and therapy should be offered to everyone
BEST MOMENTS
‘The most important thing is that you trust the person’
‘It’s fundamental to everything to feel well about yourself and think clearly’
‘To support other people you have to be able to look after yourself’

In this episode, I talk with Dr. David Rawaf, surgeon and Clinical Excellence Lead at Inovus, a doctor-led med-tech company about what happens when we experience personal and professional challenges.
Highlights Include:
How a significant car accident halted David's aspirations to move to the US as a doctor.
Why he persisted in applying for core surgical training despite the challenges he faced during the interview process.
How his extracurricular interests and achievements outside of medicine has led to becoming an influential leader in healthcare across the world.
Why it's important to focus on the journey more-so than the outcome when it comes to planning any career pathway for yourself.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Never make any decisions under duress stop, and take a step back
After giving myself time to heal and focusing on a growth mindset I was able to look for an amazing job that in turn led to more opportunities
I was able to understand more fully what was really important to me and had a great support network that helped me to move forward
I’ve always made it about the journey with anything in life and the journey moulded me into a far more rounded person
We are programmed from the very start to follow a particular career path but there is always more than one path. It’s about finding the right one for you
The clinical excellence lead is a dynamic role encompassing many different aspects including public speaking, management leadership and marketing
You need to pause reflect and take the time to make a decision but don’t give up
Shut out the noise, take a step back and decide what’s right for you and your values and decide how you can mould your career to achieve it
Whatever is happening in your career is unique to you but it's important to learn from it and from others
BEST MOMENTS
‘Stopping and taking stock of what was going on around me was important for me and everyone else’
‘Whatever the hurdles, pause, reflect, heal yourself and keep going’
‘Don’t be afraid to look at other things that can help to fulfill you and your career’

If work-life balance is something you crave as a doctor, you’ve probably thought about or looked into a few telehealth jobs as a new career option.
And this makes sense. Telemedicine GP jobs give doctors the freedom to work remotely, set their own hours and cut down on traditional clinical medicine.
But what does the reality of working as a doctor in telehealth jobs and companies involve? And how can GPs choose the best telehealth company to match their needs?
In this episode, I speak with Dr. Sherina Fernandes, GP and Clinical Lead at popular doctor-founded telehealth company Doctor Care Anywhere (DCA).
With her considerable experience working in telehealth we discuss how doctors can carve out a flexible new career path through telemedicine GP jobs and the extensive transferable skills that GPs can offer telehealth companies.
We also explore the advantages of working in telehealth, from flexible hours and remote work, to increased work-life balance and the opportunity to gain new experiences that allow doctors to progress professionally.
Best of all, with many companies currently trying to attract GPs, it’s a jobseeker’s market right now. So, we discuss how you can carefully vet a telehealth company and telemedicine GP job to make sure they’re both the best fit for you.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Any interview is a two-way process. You are also deciding if the company is right for you.
When you work digitally, you really can help patients and are able to get to know them.
The user experience with the platform is an important factor.
A lot of companies prefer employed to self-employed and if you are employed your indemnities are covered.
Smaller companies are likely to offer more flexibility.
With a telehealth company, you can do sessions and explore the other opportunities you may want to pursue.
There are many transferable skills that you have as a GP including extensive communication and risk assessment skills.
Getting into the clinical lead role has really opened everything up for me.
Opportunities for me have included public speaking, mentoring and being part of creating protocols and policies about the areas I’m interested in.
Get involved and let the organisation know what your area of interest is.
You are more likely to progress with a company if you are there from the beginning.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Now all GPs have experience in working digitally and managing patients remotely.’
‘Working with a telehealth company is about seeing patients without the stress of everything else.’
‘It was nothing but good when I joined.’
‘It was a totally different experience – I was treated as a professional and was able to work from home choosing my hours.’

People can want to make change but not know how to go about it
In some organisations, it can be challenging to find the person who can help
There needs to be new thinking around how to build a robust career development path that gives people what they need

When doctors get to the question of should I stay or go? it's important they can gain clarity on the next steps

Episode Question: Can doctors move into interior design?
In this episode, I talk with Dr. Joanna Draper who completed her core surgical training and then stepped away from her surgical career pathway and moved into a career in interior design
We discuss how she came to the decision to make a change and what training she undertook to move into a career in interior design. Joanna also explains how her medical skill set has enabled her to progress quickly to a leadership position with her current Interior Design employer and candidly reflects with me on whether changing careers was the right decision for her.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
As I progressed in my medical career I craved doing something more creative
I don’t regret doing medicine because I wanted to know that I could do it
In the end, I reached a place of burnout, realised I couldn’t sustain it and began to realise I was sacrificing too much of my life
I looked at what I enjoyed as a starting point and rediscovered interior design
Spending a year as a surgical HO was an opportunity to look at which area of medicine I might want to specialise in and ultimately confirmed for me that I wanted to make a change
Stepping away is hard because of the time spent training and the investment that has been made
Interior design does lend itself to transferable skills
My job is 10% creative and 90% logistical operations and makes effective use of the logistical skills I brought from being a doctor
College provided the network of contacts that meant that I was offered a role at the business where I interned
This is not an industry that pays hugely and the best financial benefits come through being part of the management team or having your own studio
BEST MOMENTS
‘My company is select and we work with high net worth individuals’
‘The skillset from medicine was valued and gave me an advantage
‘My training as a doctor means I can keep things in perspective’

Want to know how to start a tech company? Then this week’s show was made for you.
Maybe like many new entrepreneurs, you have a great business idea but no clue what to do with it.
It’s a common problem, because turning business ideas into reality is no easy feat - especially if you’ve never done it before.
The good news?
It’s entirely possible with the right mindset, a great support system, a clear plan of action and a big dose of determination.
And there’s no better guest to explain exactly how to start a tech company as a doctor than this week’s guest, Dr Michael Watts.
He’s the co-founder of Blüm Health, a software development company founded by clinicians and engineers who are enabling digital health innovation by supporting solo entrepreneurs and NHS trusts to turn business ideas into reality.
In this episode, we focus on the steps needed to take an initial concept to the point of delivery and discuss the potential challenges you may face as a doctor entrepreneur stepping into this alternative career path.
With the right support, a health tech idea can be the change that improves outcomes and adds value and Michael shares great career advice about how clinical entrepreneurs can successfully achieve this
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The best way to start a tech company is one step at a time
Recognising the skills you bring to the team and working with people with complementary skills is key
Effective time management, surrounding yourself with people who have the skills to solve the problem with you and accessing the right network for funding are crucial if you want to start a tech company
Find a team, find the time, and understand the landscape you will have to navigate
Academic health science networks and accelerators are there to speed up the process
Change occurs when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change
When you can demonstrate that the change you want to implement is an easier way of providing care than what currently exists there is no reason why it shouldn’t be adopted
There are ways to prove concept before you go to digital
Experience is everything in software engineering and you need to work with someone who shares the vision
Look forward and stay reactive to needs and your clients
BEST MOMENTS
‘We’ve had some really impactful projects that we have worked on’
‘It’s about clinical insight and finding the problems to solve’
‘A complimentary clinical and non-clinical team brings an understanding of the system and the technical ability’
‘Understanding the scale of the problem is the first step prior to looking for a solution’
OUR MISTAKES
This episode is an example of how we need to really support our guests in turning off their computer notifications and sounds. And perhaps wear headphones too!
We're learning!

Episode Question: What is the culture like in pharma for doctors?
In this episode John Ndikum, doctor, writer and poet talks with me in depth about a career in pharma, the entry pathways and the foundations you need
We discuss career capital - the fuel you need to advance you to where you want to be in your career and the impact of culture in both start-ups and larger organisations and how to have the difficult conversations
As we go deep this is a great opportunity to hear why you should upskill in the direction you want to go and make every action a tactic in your journey to where you want to be
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Pharma is a popular option due to the breadth and opportunities available
Career capital is the fuel you need to advance yourself in your career
Culture is different for everyone and it’s how the workplace feels, how everyone makes each other feel
Companies that make people feel good are those in the most demand so you need to have good career capital to be considered
You need to demonstrate what you can do for the company in order to be able to have the conversation
Recruiters are the bridge between you and the company, they are both collaborators and gatekeepers
I began being driven by push factors but converted that to being motivated by pull factors
My mindset is that you need something bigger than you to motivate you
I want to look back and be proud of who I am and every action now is a tactic towards that end
Companies can go through pinch points as they grow and bigger companies have the resources to deal with any issues with culture
A company needs to live by its values and these need to cascade down into each domain
You can be empirical in the way you translate values and culture into tangible actions
BEST MOMENTS
‘I wanted to make a difference at a population level and use the skills I had’
‘It’s an empirical way of guiding your career’
‘Lots of good moments and lots of learning that have increased my career capital’
‘If you continue to upskill you can become an attractive proposition’

Episode Question: Why do Doctors seek alternative careers in the US vs the UK?
In this, not to be missed episode, I’m introducing you to Dr. John Jurica MD, MPH, CPE, co-founder and career strategist at New Script and the host of the hugely successful Physician Non-Clinical Careers podcast
Dr. John pivoted from clinical to non-clinical work and is passionate about helping other doctors to understand the possibilities and extensive range of alternative opportunities out there.
We discuss the difference between doctors exploring different and diverse careers in the UK and US and take a look at the driving factors for diversification.
Dr. John also shares great information on alternative careers in the US that utilise the inherent and extensive skill sets of doctors
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The systems we find ourselves in, burnt out, taken for granted and taken advantage of after spending thousands of hours learning isn’t right
I want physicians to know that there are other great options and these can reinspire individuals
We haven’t been able to achieve any power or leverage in large bureaucratic organisations that mostly don’t recognise us as professionals
As professionals, we want to be able to meet with our patients and work with them face to face
There are many alternatives where you can successfully use your medical background to help people, make an income and feel professionally fulfilled
Diversification is key to keeping your options open and non-clinical work can be part of this
Doctors have great inherent skill sets, they think analytically and work well in teams making them great people to hire
If you are going to be an entrepreneur you need to learn how to sell yourself
If you are diversifying getting an additional certification can help with moving into alternative areas
BEST MOMENTS
‘You need to take advantage of the alternatives out there’
‘Public health could be a good way to get into the system in the US’
‘I’m dedicated to finding different ways to help physicians’
‘There are at least twenty major consulting firms that hire physicians on a regular basis’
