Episode Question: What is the culture like in pharma for doctors?
In this episode John Ndikum, doctor, writer and poet talks with me in depth about a career in pharma, the entry pathways and the foundations you need
We discuss career capital - the  fuel you need to advance you to where you want to be in your career and the impact of culture in both start-ups and larger organisations and how to have the difficult conversations
As we go deep this is a great opportunity to hear why you should upskill in the direction you want to go and make every action a tactic in your journey to where you want to be

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Pharma is a popular option due to the breadth and  opportunities available
Career capital is the fuel you need to advance yourself in your career
Culture is different for everyone and it’s how the workplace feels, how everyone makes each other feel
Companies that make people feel good are those in the most demand so you need to have good career capital to be considered
You need to demonstrate what you can do for the company in order to be able to have the conversation
Recruiters are the bridge between you and the company, they are both collaborators and gatekeepers
I began being driven by push factors but converted that to being motivated by pull factors
My mindset is that you need something bigger than you to motivate you
I want to look back and be proud of who I am and every action now is a tactic towards that end
Companies can go through pinch points as they grow and bigger companies have the resources to deal with any issues with culture
A company needs to live by its values and these need to cascade down into each domain
You can be empirical in the way you translate values and culture into tangible actions

BEST MOMENTS
‘I wanted to make a difference at a population level and use the skills I had’
‘It’s an empirical way of guiding your career’
‘Lots of good moments and lots of learning that have increased my career capital’
‘If you continue to upskill you can become an attractive proposition’

Episode Question: Why do Doctors seek alternative careers in the US vs the UK?
In this, not to be missed episode, I’m introducing you to Dr. John Jurica MD, MPH, CPE, co-founder and career strategist at New Script and the host of the hugely successful Physician Non-Clinical Careers podcast
Dr. John pivoted from clinical to non-clinical work and is passionate about helping other doctors to understand the possibilities and extensive range of alternative opportunities out there.
We discuss the difference between doctors exploring different and diverse careers in the UK and US and take a look at the driving factors for diversification.
Dr. John also shares great information on alternative careers in the US that utilise the inherent and extensive skill sets of doctors

KEY TAKEAWAYS
The systems we find ourselves in,  burnt out, taken for granted and taken advantage of after spending thousands of hours learning isn’t right
I want physicians to know that there are other great options and these can reinspire individuals
We haven’t been able to achieve any power or leverage in large bureaucratic organisations that mostly don’t recognise us as professionals
As professionals, we want to be able to meet with our patients and work with them face to face
There are many alternatives where you can successfully use your medical background to help people, make an income and feel professionally fulfilled
Diversification is key to keeping your options open and non-clinical work can be part of this
Doctors have great  inherent skill sets, they think analytically and work well in teams making them great people to hire
If you are going to be an entrepreneur you need to learn how to sell yourself
If you are diversifying getting an additional certification can help with moving into alternative areas

BEST MOMENTS
‘You need to take advantage of the alternatives out there’
‘Public health could be a good way to get into the system in the US’
‘I’m dedicated to finding different ways to help physicians’
‘There are at least twenty major consulting firms that hire physicians on a regular basis’

‘How senior a doctor, do you need to be to a Chief Medical Officer?’
In this episode I am joined by Dr Johnny Andrews to discuss the role of a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and what it really takes to be one.
Is seniority as a doctor a key factor in whether you can get this role?
Johnny himself has made the journey to CMO from Foundation year 2 level and shares great insights into the role and what it takes along with great tips on what YOU can do to effectively position yourself to make it to Chief Medical Officer at a company of your choice.
Oh.. and we mention 'CCT'.. a lot.. and didn't explain the acronym for those not familiar with the term. It means 'Certificate of Completion of Training' in the UK - where you become the golden child.. AKA Consultant or the point where you've finished your training in that specialty.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Every job and business will want something specific to their unique selling point
As CMO, you are an executive and leader within the company with managerial responsibilities
It was my background and  exposure to regulatory procedures combined with being proactive about having the conversation
The size of the company influences the multiple skill sets required
There comes a point when you are growing a company that you need to be able to focus on specific areas
A leadership position will require decision making and the medical title means it’s a medical role requiring opinions and advice reflecting this medical position
Any doctor can do a number of roles It’s about confidence and how you sell yourself
Any doctor can apply to be a CMO its about you communicating your experience and skills

BEST MOMENTS
‘The role itself is medical and I bring my insights from the NHS’
‘I value the time face to face with patients’
‘Start-ups and more established companies have different expectations’

In this episode, I interview one of the most influential podcasters in health tech, Tjaša Zajc host of the ‘Faces of Digital Health’ podcast.
We discuss the questions around how and why a doctor may want to set up a podcast from the benefits through to practicalities, possible formats and why it's vital you  are consistent
There are varied reasons for hosting a podcast from the opportunity to amplify your own voice and message to sharing inspiring content from expert guests. If you are thinking about setting up a podcast this is a great listen with a combination of practical advice and aspirational content from someone who is both influential and has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the area of podcasting.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
A podcast can help to amplify your voice and message
There is a wide range of benefits that come with hosting a podcast from increasing your network to learning more and broadening your experiences
The first thing is to understand what’s out there and work out what you will do that will differentiate you from others
If you are articulate and have an established brand then your content may just be you talking
You need to be very consistent in your publishing to succeed you need to form a habit with your audience
If you are curious about what others think, a format where you interview others could be the right one for you
I identify potential guests through recommendations from my network and by contacting people I admire
If people are listening, they are interested in what you have to say

BEST MOMENTS
‘I’m driven by curiosity and I like to talk to experts about things’
‘The focus of my podcast is how do systems across the world adopt digital health and health tech’
‘From the beginning, this was a long-term commitment for at least 5 to 10 years and I enjoy it more every day’

As a practising Consultant in Occupational Medicine, I offer my perspective on Occupational Medicine as a career choice - made when I was at a significant crossroads (one of many!) in my own medical career.
If you have begun thinking about doing something different in your career, this is a must-listen.
Ultimately all doctors want to make an impact and I explain the positives of this untapped specialty and some of the many advantages for a work-life balance that can be sustainable and relatively lucrative.

A lot of our work is being on the intersection between the employer and employee helping them to navigate their relationships in a healthy way
Occupational medicine does not require you to work nights or weekends the usual workday is 9 -5
There are a variety of doctors with a variety of qualifications and experience is a valuable asset
You can do the CESR route for all medical specialities so that you can DIY your own training
The Occupational Medicine diploma gives you the best return on investment than any other diploma
In Occupational Medicine, you can train in the private sector
There are so many different pathways and opportunities and you can also choose to start your own business
You do need to be able to work both remotely and on your own and you are providing advice and recommendations not mandates

BEST MOMENTS
‘It’s the speciality I’ve been in the longest and I love it’
‘For most opportunities, the most you will be expected to do is 9 to 5

In this episode, I tackle the frequently asked question about how to get a job in Health Tech as a doctor.
I explain the 3 main approaches that can be used when looking for a new role and share my unique knowledge on how each can be used in the most effective way
With health tech being a relatively new sector, there are fantastic opportunities you can access as a doctor.
This is an informative listen that provides useful approaches to move you to the role you want to have.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
There are 3 main ways of getting a job in health tech – the traditional Front door approach, the Side door – where you enter either traditionally or through project work then move into other roles, and the Back door – through a warm network referral
The front door approach is the traditional process of applying for a role when it’s advertised
Many jobs are never advertised so this can limit the roles and opportunities
The side door approach lets you test out the company you are interested in by doing some project work
If a company already knows and trusts an individual when something becomes available that individual will be their choice
With the back door approach, you need to identify anyone you know who can give you a referral, look at your network of colleagues, friends, and family for connections to the area you want to work in
Events are a great way of meeting new people and building new relationships
Approximately 20-30% of new hires come from referrals alone

BEST MOMENTS
‘You need someone who can champion you into getting a project or job’
'LinkedIn is a huge network resource for finding other doctors'

In this episode, I discuss the creation of the Medic Footprints platform and why the landscape of career opportunities is changing.
I look at the vital importance of the transferable skill sets that doctors possess and why it’s critical that doctors have access to diverse career opportunities - meaning they can make the impact they want and they are happier and healthier in a career they chose.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Burnout amongst doctors is sky high and many want to use their transferable skills in different ways, beyond the usual career pathways
Doctors are reaching a point of burnout and leaving
An interview is a two-way process, the doctor attending the interview has made a decision to attend and the company is interviewing because they see someone who is an asset
We are not just a number or a statistic we are talented, ambitious human beings who joined medicine and healthcare to help and support patients
Medical careers were generally designed to be a one size fits all as it fits into workforce planning
A one size fits all solution is not a sustainable one and it will continue to be a problem as we move into the future of work
Doctors are one of the most talented workforces we have on this planet so it's critical that we make the most of their transferable skills and reach their potential for the benefit of everyone

BEST MOMENTS
‘I’m on a mission to connect one million doctors across the world with the best and most diverse career opportunities
‘We are disrupting doctors' careers, transforming the way we think about doctors' roles in the wider healthcare system and in society as a whole’
